Trackless Barriers and Security Grilles

Not all openings are compatible with shutters. Some are just too wide, have a curve, can’t take a box overhead. Some require more air and visibility than a solid barrier. That’s what grilles and trackless barriers are for.

What “trackless” means

The word gets used for 2 different products and this causes issues when getting quotes.

The first is a mobile barrier. Instead of using a floor track, a folding trellis-style screen is mounted on steel reinforced wheels and can be rolled out of the way. Because there is no track, there is nothing to obstruct pallet trucks and forklifts. Mobile barriers are used in warehouses and storage facilities.

The second is a trackless bi-folding gate for a site entrance. It folds open to the side with no ground track, making it faster and avoiding a track in the road to fill with grit and ice. Some are LPS 1175-rated.

What Is a Trackless Barrier?

Loading docks and warehouse zoning

It’s hot outside and working in a closed loading dock is unbearable. An open loading dock invites unwanted guests, but having a barrier across the loading dock allows air flow and keeps people out of the dock. Inside the building the barriers can be used to fence off high value stock, bonded goods or other dangerous goods during a particular shift. The barriers can then be moved to allow a change in layout.

Security grilles

Grilles offer a less obstructed view compared to traditional security grilles. Unlike traditional security grilles, grilles slide to the side or fold down when opened. Traditional security grilles black-out the entire frontage. There are various ways to use grilles; i.e., Traditional grilles stay permanently in the open position over windows. Grilles work best in situations where an opening never needs to be cleared.

Shops usually consider how much the grille moves and where the stacked grille will be during trading hours. A retractable grille that is stacked across half a window display defeats the purpose of having a display.

Like doors and shutters, the only real proof a grille can withstand an attack is if it has a tested rating to LPS 1175.
